Intel And LG’s MID Called “Moorestown”

Back in February, at the Mobile World Congress, Intel and LG announced a new MID called “Moorestown.” “It is codenamed for the successor to Intel’s current Atom processor,” says Christian Coley from eFluxMedia.

MID is a relatively new term. MID and smartphones can be interchangeable, but since Moorestown has been named a MID, it will probably be bigger than a smartphone. So basically, the device is kind of a mix between a laptop and smartphone. It will require wireless Internet of course, which means signing up for a plan or connecting to wifi spots more than likely. Hopefully the wireless and data plans of the future will be better than the ones now. Internet, messaging, email, all that should be combined into one service with one fee, at least that’s what I’m hoping for.

Intel and LG’s announcement is the hottest thing in the MID industry right now. In fact, if you search Google for “Mobile Internet Device 2009“, that’s pretty much all that shows up on the first page.

Many websites I researched include that “MIDs represent an emerging growth category in the industry, being designed to bring a PC-like Internet experience in pocketable devices.” Which is exactly what Intel’s goal is.

It has been said that the Moorestown chip will use 10 times less power compared to current platforms.

If you want some more details and specifics of Moorestown, you can check out some press releases on Intel’s site.

The release date will be probably be late 2009 or 2010.
